CAPTAIN RANK IN THE MILITARY

A captain is a commissioned officer in the military. They command a company of 60-200 soldiers. They are senior to lieutenants (cadets) and are juniors to majors. A soldier can attain the rank of a captain after 4 years of military service. A lieutenant can also be promoted to captain after a 2.5 years service. Professionals like chaplins, doctors and lawyers attain this rank immediately after enrolling into the military.

An infantry captain, with assistance of a non-commissioned officer, is in charge of a company which comprises of four platoons and several support staff. These captains assigns roles to the different lieutenants in their companies.

A tank captain is in command of 12 combat tanks that are spread across the platoons in their company.

Apart from being a company leader, a captain can assume the role of a staff officer in a battalion. Here, they deputize a lieutenant colonel or a colonel in leading troops. As staff officers, the duties of a captain include tactical operations and administrative duties in a battalion.

A captain takes on the role of a supervisor to his troops. They will supervise on a wide range of activities ranging from operational strategies to daily routine work of the soldiers. It is the work of the captains to offer motivation and guidance to the troops they command.

A captain can serve as a training and recruiting officer in a military school. A professional can also be deployed as a teacher in military classrooms. Professional captains are the officers who hold cililian educational degrees like lawyers and doctors.

Promotion to the rank of a captain is a rigorous and competitive process. A candidate has to undergo strict evaluation on matters of leadership and performance. Additionally, the candidate has to pass a captain leadership program with exceptional results. The program pertains training on matters of operation command, training units, leadership, communication skills and problem solving.

 A colonel is a rank above the lieutenant colonel and a rank junior to a brigadier/brigade general/brigadier general. The colonel is a senior officer in command of a regiment. A brigadier is a one-star military rank above the colonel and below a major general. A brigadier commands a brigade of 4000 soldiers in groups of battalions.
